The family of heterochromatin protein 1 consists mainly of highly conserved proteins which have essential role in the cell nucleus. These roles involve transcriptional activation, regulation of binding of cohesion complexes to centromeres, gene repression by heterochromatin formation etc. The protein may play a fundamental role in the epigenetic control of chromatin structure and gene expression. |
